The CSST office administers the CSST Summer Research Program which brings third-year undergraduate students from top tier univerisities in PR China and Japan to conduct a ten week long, intensive research program under UCLA faculty mentors. Each program participant will be enrolled in 12 units of UCLA courses, conduct research under the guidance of a UCLA faculty mentor, and attend mandatory CSST activities including professional development and networking events. CSST offers emerging scholars premier research training in a cutting edge scientific environment that fosters cross-disciplinary collaborations. After 10 successful cycles of training and recruitment, about 25% of CSST summer students have enrolled in UCLA PhD programs.

Other information

About 90% of CSST participants came from Biomedical & Life Sciences, Physical Science, and Engineering majors (STEM majors: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics). But we also welcome students from non-STEM majors such as Geology, Sociology, Political Science, Urban Planning, Economics etc.

A limited number (~300) of applicants who meet the following criteria will be selected for the in-person faculty interviews:

  • Strong interest in UCLA PhD career
  • Outstanding academic achievement
  • Previous research experience
  • High English proficiency (TOEFL 79; IELTS 6.5)
  • Interest in interdisciplinary studies
  • Self-motivated and creative
  • Mature, independent, and unique personality

Roughly 90 students will be admitted into the summer program. Selected program participants will receive a scholarship to cover UCLA Summer Sessions tuition and administrative fees. Students are expected to cover their own travel and visa related expenses, as well as mandatory on-campus housing and meals during their stay in Los Angeles.
